Course Description and Topics Covered

Over the next five years, it is expected that shale gas production will contribute close to 20% of the gas production in the U.S. This course will provide introductory information about shale gas. The course reviews the full spectrum of shale gas evaluation and development techniques and challenges. The course will cover the current knowledge about shale gas. In addition, it would also cover the future challenges and current understanding of various topics. It will briefly discuss the directions of various technologies in shale gas area. The course begins by addressing the role of shale gas in world energy resources, and compares and contrasts shale gas with conventional resources. Participants will learn the basics of shale gas geology and characteristics, as well evaluation tools used and criteria selected. Properties among different shales are reviewed and desirable characteristics are discussed. We will briefly discuss the technology involved in shale gas completions, which is followed by challenges of shale gas reservoir modeling. Finally the course will discuss the production characteristics of shale gas wells and their decline behavior. We will briefly discuss the differences in conventional decline curve analysis and the shale gas analysis.

Audience

Professional geologists, petrophysicists, geophysicists, engineers, managers & professional technicians.

Instructors

Mohan Kelkar is Williams Endowed Professor and Chairman of Petroleum Engineering at The University of Tulsa. He has worked on Woodford, Barnett and Bakken Shale projects. He has taught Gas Production Engineering class to more than 1000 professionals throughout the world and has recently authored a book titled “Natural Gas Production Engineering,” published by PennWell Publications. His main research interests are reservoir characterization and modeling and production optimization. He has published more than fifty refereed articles and has made more than hundred and fifty presentations at various technical meetings.

Harun Ates is a reservoir modeling and simulation consultant for Kelkar and Assocs. Inc., based in Tulsa. He has conducted integrated reservoir description field projects and simulation studies for various oil fields in the Middle East, Russian, South America and USA. He has worked with wide range of reservoirs; conventional and unconventional, carbonate and clastic; fractured and non-fractured. He is also the instructor for “geostatistical reservoir modeling course” for Schlumberger-NExT. Ates holds MS and PhD degrees in petroleum engineering from the U. of Tulsa.
